Модальные глаголы в английском языке не употребляются самостоятельно, поскольку не выражают определенных действий, а обозначают лишь отношение говорящего к действию: способность, возможность, вероятность, необходимость, предположительность, долженствование, разрешение, поэтому модальные глаголы всегда употребляются в сочетании с инфинитивом основного смыслового глагола без частицы to, за исключением некоторых модальных глаголов.

Следует помнить, что некоторые модальные глаголы не имеют форм будущего или прошедшего времени. В таблице представлены временные формы наиболее чаще употребляющихся модальных глаголов.

Модальный глагол сan выражает:

1. Возможность или способность (физическую или умственную) совершения действия в настоящем и будущем.

I can read in English very fast .
Я могу читать быстро читать по-английски.

I can stay with children.
Я могу остаться с детьми.

2. Возможность совершения действия, которое основано на позволении, разрешении.

Can I see Mr. Glover? Могу видеть мистера Гловера ?

You can come in . Вы можете войти.

Модальный глагол could выражает:

1. Возможность или способность совершения действия в прошлом, т.е. глагол could – это can в прошлом.

My grandmother could speak 5 languages.
Моя бабушка могла говорить на 5 языках.

Last week he could arrange a meeting with the Prime Minister.
На прошлой недели мы смогли устроить встречу с премьер-министром.

2. Отражает подчеркнуто вежливый тон.

Could you speak louder , please ? Пожалуйста, не могли бы Вы говорить громче?
Could you help me? Не могли бы Вы помочь мне?

3. Сильное удивление или упрёк.

He couldn’t be so old .
Он не может быть таким старым.

You could at least call me!
Как минимум Вы могли позвонить мне.

Глагол be able to иногда используется вместо can и could для выражения возможности. Однако, мы не используем be able to в следующих случаях

(i) Когда мы говорим о чём-то, что происходит в момент речи.

Watch me, Dad! I can stand on one leg (NOT: I am able to stand on one leg).

(ii) Когда используем страдательный залог.

Movies can now be copied easily. (NOT: Movies are now able to be copied).

(iii) В значении “знать как”.

Can you cook? (NOT: Are you able to cook?)

be able to :

Глагол may выражает:

1. Возможность совершения действия, которое может осуществиться, но может и не осуществиться (возможность совершения действия 50%).

It may be true. (=perhaps it is true) . Это может быть правдой.

It may make you furious . Это может тебя привести в ярость.

2. Разрешение или просьбу (попросить или дать разрешение). При этом это более формально, чем фраза с глаголом can .

You may use my dictionary. Ты можешь взять мой словарь.

May I have a cup of coffee, please? Чашку кофе, пожалуйста.

Глагол might выражает:

1. Большую степень неуверенности, чем глагол may (возможность совершения действия 40%).

He might want some more food.
Он возможно хочет немного больше еды.

You might know him . Вы возможно знаете его.

2. May в прошедшем форме.

During the war, the police might arrest you for criticising the king .
Во время войны, полиция могла Вас арестовать за критику короля.

Как образовывается отрицательная и вопросительная форма модального глагола may :


Глагол must выражает:

1. Логическое предположение, то есть предположение почти граничащее с уверенностью

He must be at work. Он должен быть на работе.

It must be him. Это должно быть он.

2. Oсознанную необходимость.

People must take care of nature. Люди должны заботиться о природе.

I must buy a new coat . Я должен купить новое пальто.

You must not smoke there. Ты не должен курить здесь.

You must not touch it. Ты не должен трогать это.

4. Обязанность.

Everyone must obey the law. Все должны соблюдать закон.

I must do it. Я должен сделать это.

You must go and see this film. It is very interesting. Вы обязательно должны посмотреть этот фильм. Он очень интересный.

6. Отсутствие желания выполнять действие или сомнение в его необходимости в вопросах.

Must I go to the shop now? А надо прямо сейчас идти в магазин?

Глагол have to выражает:

1)Вынужденность или надобность действия (вызванная обстоятельствами)

People have to save natural resources, otherwise they will face energetic crisis.
Люди должны беречь природные ресурсы, иначе они столкнуться с энергетическим кризисом.

He has to put some petrol to the car .
Он должен заправить машину.

I have to know it . Я должен знать это.

Как образовывается отрицательная и вопросительная форма модального глагола have to :

Глагол need to выражает необходимость.

I need to learn how to drive.

You need to lose some weight.

Глагол should и ought to используются:

1. Для выражения морального обязательства.
